Counseling vs. therapy? Is there even a difference? Here’s the answer.

The terms “counseling” and “therapy” are often used interchangeably, though technically, there are some differences. If you are looking to get help with your mental health, it is important to get the proper resources for your situation.

To help clear up any confusion, let’s talk about those differences, some benefits, advice on which to choose, and more between counseling vs. therapy.

Defining Counseling and Therapy

Counseling by definition is assistance in resolving social, psychological, or personal problems from a licensed professional. Therapy by definition is the treatment of psychological disorders using various treatment methods guided by a mental health professional.

As you can see, there are some differences between the definitions.

Main Differences Between Counseling and Therapy

Counseling and therapy differ in several ways. Just looking at the definitions, counseling is a broader term than therapy which is more narrow.

When in a counseling session, you are working through any problems regardless of their origin using problem-solving techniques, while in therapy, you are more focused on discovering and healing past trauma, subconscious behaviors, and the root of problems.

This means that therapy often goes much deeper than counseling, though depending on your relationship with your counselor, they can help you with those deeper discoveries, too.

More differences can be analyzed in the nuances of counseling and therapy, but these aspects are the main differences to be aware of.

Benefits of Counseling vs. Therapy

So, then what are the benefits of participating in counseling versus therapy or vice versa?

Well, for some, counseling is the best choice because they are solution-based with immediate problems that they would like to solve. Counseling provides more immediate results without opening additional past wounds and taking the time to analyze the origins.

However, some people like therapy because they are having more generalized, repeating problems that seemingly have no solution. Therapy allows them to go deeper and discover the root, correct that issue, and then move forward in a more fulfilling and happy life based on their work and dedication over time in regular therapy sessions.

Should I Do Counseling or Therapy?

By this point, you are probably asking whether you should do counseling or therapy.

The short answer to that question is that it depends on your own personality, situation, and concerns. Going deeper, the best way to tell is to do some initial reflection on how you are feeling and what you think you might need help with. Then, see whether counseling or therapy best aligns with your conclusions based on what you have learned.

However, if you just can’t decide or are having trouble making that distinction, a good rule of thumb is to start with counseling. After all, counseling is solution-based so they can even help you make the determination between therapy or counseling is more helpful in your case.

If there is one thing any counselor or mental health professional will always be open and honest about it is whether they are the person that can best help you. If they are not, they will not hesitate to tell you why and recommend exactly who can help you.
